Had to get this one since I like The Way Things Work so much. I enjoy the pictures and the format is great. Nice addition to my library.
Its a cool gift book even for kids. If you are at all interested in the way the human body works you'll love this book.
A bit advanced for my three-year old grandson, but I suspect his father will enjoy it (and three year olds do grow up bit by bit).
It is not written for medical professionals. (To name a few)So this great little human body user guide is great for someone like me. It is not necessary to read in order or read at one time. I enjoy reading factual accounts on history, politicians, and science.
Macaulay said he wrote this on about an 8th grade level. He did a nice job of explaining every function with a mix of medical science and story telling. The final result is palatable for 14 year olds and up. Just don't expect it to get too technical. My first exposure to this book was hearing the interview of David Macauley on NPR. I was hooked and ordered the book from Amazon that very day.I believe he mentioned it took about 8 years to complete this project. That's fine with me. But this book allows the reader to come back at any time.
I was reading other novels at the time and busy with other things. It is written for folks that want an easy to understand account of how our body works on a day to day basis. It's a good read for the entire family. Nobody will feel put off by this simplified and easy to digest guide to the human body. Nobody really wants to read a medical journal for fun. For that, I found it charming and fun to read. His illustrations are entertaining and interesting to examine.
Plus, he illustrated this book with neat colored pencil style drawings that are fun in their own right. You could call me a useless trivia junkie. Most people will already be familiar with a lot of the information that is in this book. I didn't sit down and read from cover to cover right away. Did you know that "on an average day kidneys process the equivalent of twelve bathtubs full of blood to produce one big soda bottle full of urine." (Page 138)Mr. This book was easy.
Everyone should have this book in their library. This is a beautifully done research reference work about the body and how it works.
